I think I have a problem with just chronically adding keyframes. Am I losing the plot?

Take your time, and try not to wreck yourself.
Adding keyframes is not a problem, it's animation, and it's a progress adding even more plot. Do that as much as you want if it feels unfinished. It will only make it better, unless it makes your flash crash and makes me buy a second pack of popcorn for it.
